A Valentine For Our Four-Legged Friends

Whether itโ€™s Happy Valentineโ€™s Day or Happy Galentineโ€™s Day, love is in the air!

While people are preoccupied with love stories and Cupidโ€™s arrow, weโ€™d like to give a special shout-out to those who love us unconditionally year-round โ€” our furry, four-legged family members.

Issue 7 of Second Draft Journals: Love Notes & Paw Prints is the puuurfect journal for pet lovers everywhere. Whether you journal about your day-to-day life and goals, or you keep a record about your fur baby (because thereโ€™s just too much to tell if you have to rely on someone else to care for them), we hope that you love the original works of art, the short story, Puppy Love, and the poems about self-care and our four-legged friends. With white and rose-tinted lined pages, this Second Draft Journal is meant to be soothing and sweet long after the Valentineโ€™s Day candy is gone.

Happy Valentineโ€™s Day!

Two Faces, Two Interpretations

My mom created this design in the early 1990s.

I saw this painting many times throughout my childhood; the black personโ€™s eye is open and the white personโ€™s eyes remain closed.

I thought, if she painted it today, the white personโ€™s eyes would be open too; bearing witness to the reality our black friends face.

So I asked her: If she painted this design today, would she change it?

She surprised me by saying that she wouldโ€™ve painted both sets of eyes closed โ€” hopeful that the day that black people can shut their eyes and enjoy a moment of peace and relaxation is on the horizon.

Art may be subjective but โ€” whether you imagine Dixie Foxtonโ€™s design with eyes open or closed โ€” I hope that humanity stands together until both interpretations are realized and become commonplace.

Thanks for letting me share your work, Mom.

The Story Behind ‘Musings of a Masterpiece’

Musings of a Masterpiece, book cover

Weโ€™ve all heard the stories: a woman unexpectedly finds a priceless work of art in a second-hand store, a family had no idea their grandmotherโ€™s furniture was worth a fortune, and he was down to his last $10 when he sold a garage sale knick-knack for untold millions, etc.

Thomas Adamson (of The Associated Press) wrote of one such occurrence in an article titled, โ€œFrench woman didnโ€™t realize she owned a masterpiece โ€” it just sold for almost $35Mโ€ for Global News.

I read his article and was instantly inspired to write Musings of a Masterpiece.

Youโ€™d think it was the financial windfall that inspired me, but it wasnโ€™t.

I asked myself: If a masterpiece painted centuries ago was aware, what would it think of life? What would it want us to know?

I hope that you enjoy reading Musings of a Masterpiece. It is one of my favourite works. (And if you happen to know Thomas Adamson, kindly send him this link.)

While our American counterparts are celebrating Presidents’ Day, (most of) Canada is enjoying a long weekend, as we observe Family Day.

Whomever you call family (whether you have pets or not), I hope that you have a wonderful long weekend.

Before you go, I wish to bring your attention to a young Canadian woman who lost her battle to brain cancer Saturday night, at the age of 18. Her name is Becca Schofield.
